Developers

This part of the OpenATV handbook is for developers. It starts with skinning: how Python screens, XML layouts and native Enigma2 widgets produce the interface on a receiver.

All developer chapters are written in English and appear unchanged in both handbook editions. The global search includes them in both editions. In More languages, choose Deutsch — automatic to translate this English section into German, or select another language. Screenshots and code remain English.

  1. How an Enigma2 skin works: the screen-to-pixels path.
  2. Files, paths and loading order: where the pieces live and which definition wins.
  3. Your first screen: a complete small Python/XML example.
  4. Positions and resolution, text and fonts, colours and layers, pixmaps and panels: change one attribute and inspect the actual receiver result.
  5. Sources, converters and renderers: connect data to a visible widget.
  6. Search the skin.py API: attributes, value parsers, loading helpers and classes, with links into the pinned source.
  7. Advanced skinning: InfoBar data chains, classic and modern channel lists, templates, reusable panel designs and icon fonts.
  8. Skinning for OpenATV 8.0 — network screens: detailed list contracts, mixed row templates, palettes, Wi-Fi profiles, shares/mounts and inherited forms.

The examples use deliberately small, independent screens. They teach the shared Enigma2 skin engine without depending on a particular receiver model, channel, recording or network configuration.

The advanced unit adds nine native examples for InfoBar, ChannelSelection, panels and icon fonts. ChoiceBox and other specialised screen recipes can follow in later units. A searchable name in the source index is not a claim that its complete API is taught here.
