Teletext – pages, subpages and settings

Teletext is carried by the broadcaster. Normal DVB teletext does not require Internet access. HbbTV and online catch-up services are different systems. An IPTV stream may contain teletext, but need not; the player must also support it.

Open and read

Section titled “Open and read”
  1. Tune to a channel carrying teletext and press TEXT, or the assigned teletext action.
  2. Enter a three-digit page number, such as 100 for the usual starting page. Follow the broadcaster’s index.
  3. Colour buttons select links displayed at the bottom, where available. Use the dialog’s controls to change pages/subpages; check HELP or its menu help.
  4. Press EXIT to return to TV.

A page may contain several subpages. Data arrives cyclically, so a blank display just after changing channel may still be loading. News, programme and subtitle page numbers differ between broadcasters.

For teletext subtitles, use Enigma2 subtitle selection when the broadcaster exposes them there. This displays them over the TV picture. Opening an arbitrary text page does not automatically enable the correct subtitle track.

Cache, font and resolution

Open MENU → Setup → Usage & GUI → Customize System Settings, then the Teletext section. The setup key is Usage. Some options require a higher settings level.

This resolution concerns teletext output. It neither turns a channel into HD nor adds an HDMI output mode.

tuxtxt_UseTTF, tuxtxt_TTFBold TrueType instead of fixed font; regular or bold appearance.

tuxtxt_StartX / EndX, StartY / EndY Text-area boundaries. For clipped edges, first check the preset and picture geometry.

Save applies changes; leaving without saving discards edits according to the setup dialog. The native implementation writes teletext values to /etc/tuxtxt/tuxtxt2.conf. Prefer the interface and avoid copying unknown defaults from another receiver.

When nothing appears

Check that the current service carries teletext and that TEXT actually opens teletext in this context. In MediaPlayer it may select subtitles. Allow time for data after a channel change. With IPTV, also check stream content and player; channel descriptions or EPG data do not prove teletext is present.
